You're interested in joining Troop 6320 Mariners, but you are still have questions?
Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we are asked:
How often do you meet?
Our goal is to schedule one weekend (Friday - Sunday) event each month. During the school year, we meet on zoom on Thursday nights for an hour to work on planning, badges, budgets, and other administrative tasks. During the summer, we meet weekly at a waterfront for a troop swim call & to work on our swimming, safety, and other water skills.
How do you organize the troop?
The girls are organized into mixed-age-group patrols, these groups are periodically adjusted as members join or leave, and are the basic working teams for tasks and planning. As our scouts mature, they take on additional responsibilities for event planning, budgeting, menu selection & shopping, cooking, camp kapers, etc. The responsibility grows with the scouts as they gain experience.
What months do you go camping? When the weather is not great, what are alternative plans (if any)?
We usually tent camp a few times/year, mostly in spring and fall seasons. Sometimes we use platform tents/tent cabins, or rustic cabins.
Winter overnights have typically been in heated buildings at Girl Scout properties and other properties / hostels / hotels when we plan regional and national travel.
What kind of communication do you have for the parents (email? Facebook? Website?)
Trooptrack is used for all formal communications, schedules, event RSVP, badge tracking, and financial tracking, photos are shared on trooptrack albums.
Informal facebook group for the adults, some photo sharing
Informal text messages, phone calls
Does the troop provide tents/equipment for campouts? What camping equipment do Scouts need for the troop campouts?
Troop rents or borrows tents, or members bring their own
Scouts are expected to have their own sleeping bag, backpack, swimsuit/goggles
Does the troop provide their own watersports equipment? What equipment do individual scouts need for watersports?
Troop owns some PFDs, but scouts may bring their own correctly sized, coast guard approved, PFD
Troop supplies swim caps for open water swims
Scouts are expected to have their own swimsuit/goggles
Scouts may purchase mask/fins/snorkel suitable for snorkeling or scuba diving using their "Individual Girl Account" funds from money-earning activities
What service projects does the troop do?
Park trash clean up when we are hiking
Aquatic weed clean up at waterfronts when we have swim call
Painting / light repairs / debris and trash cleanup at local scout camps for the rangers when we are on site
Water Safety education and community outreach
What ages are in the troop currently?
In 2023-2024 scout year, we have 6th - 10th grade scouts
What ages can join the troop?
Our troop accepts 6th-12th grade scouts. Some activities require a minimum age of 12 years old on the date of the activity due to safety rules.
In certain circumstances, 4th and 5th grade scouts are invited to join us with parental involvement (parent must be registered member of scouts and participate in activities). These are evaluated on a case-by-case basis to ensure the troop is a good fit for the scout and family.
What geographical areas is the troop active in?
We have scouts from Washington County, Sheboygan County, and Waukesha County, Wisconsin.
We do activities all across the Girl Scouts of Southeast Wisconsin council area, and regional activities throughout Wisconsin and surrounding states.
